8 Things Everyone Hates About Stretching & How Pilates Can Help

Stretching – a crucial element often included in workout routines or recommended for daily health benefits. We’ve heard countless times how important stretching is, yet, let's face it, there are aspects that many of us dread. So here are 8 common things that seem to make us bond through our shared dislike for that seemingly simple act of stretching (and how Pilates can help):

1. The Dreaded Soreness

We start off this list with the one factor that often discourages people from stretching – the soreness that comes after a good stretch. As much as the experts say it's normal, the discomfort can be enough to make us procrastinate our stretching routines for days!

2. The Time Consumption

Stretching might seem like a quick addition to your daily regimen, but the stretching session always somehow ends up taking forever. Those moments of holding a stretch for what feels like an eternity can indeed test anyone’s patience.

3. The Awkward Positions

Let's be real – some stretches put us in ridiculously awkward poses that seem far from natural. Whether you're attempting to reach behind your back or a simple quad stretch, ending up in those contorted positions can be quite embarrassing, making us wonder if it's worth it.

4. The Lack of Flexibility

One of the biggest frustrations of stretching is facing our own lack of flexibility. Trying to reach for our toes or stretching our legs apart can be a daunting task, leaving us feeling defeated and inflexible.

5. The Boredom

Repetitive stretches can quickly become monotonous, leading to sheer boredom during a stretching routine. Counting down the seconds while holding a stretch can feel like a never-ending cycle of tedium.

6. The Inconsistency

Consistency is key when it comes to stretching, but for many, it seems to be easier said than done. Remembering to stretch daily often falls to the wayside amidst our busy schedules, leaving us feeling guilty for the lack of commitment.

7. The Lack of Instant Results

In a world of instant gratification, stretching might feel like a thankless task. Unlike a workout that gives you an instant rush and visible results, the benefits of stretching take time to show, leaving many feeling discouraged.

8. The Feel of Stretching on Cold Muscles

Last but not least, the discomfort of stretching cold muscles can be a major turn-off. Attempting to stretch before a proper warm-up can feel like tugging on resistant rubber bands, making the process way less appealing.

These are just a few of the many reasons why stretching can be a dreaded activity for many. However, despite the dislikes, it’s important to remember the many benefits that stretching offers, from increased flexibility to improved posture and reduced muscle tension.

That's why Pilates is perfect - every exercise is a full body exercise that balances stretching your muscles with strengthening. Your lack of flexibility will disappear faster than you think, and you'll notice you can get a little more from each exercise from session to session. No more boring stretch sessions because Pilates keeps you moving & focusing on more than simply holding a position.

The way your Pilates classes are structured will gradually ease you into deeper stretches and take away the need to stretch cold muscles, and you won't feel awkward because everyone is doing the same thing. It's easier to stay consistent with your Pilates routine in a group class or private session that forces you to show up, and you'll eliminate the need for a separate stretch session!

So, the next time you find yourself procrastinating that stretching routine, remember, you're not alone in hating these aspects of stretching. Embrace Pilates and get the stretches you want with the strengthening you need, and you'll love the countless other benefits it brings!
